The English Breakfast is a traditional dish that dates back to the 1300s when it was very popular in the country houses of the English gentry. It continued to be a sign of wealth and luxury amongst the upper classes until it became part of the working-class staple diet in the 1950s.
Also known as a ‘full English’ or more colloquially as a ‘fry up’, this breakfast is still very much part of English life today. It is a dish that is served in all sorts of establishments from 5-star hotels and restaurants to cafés and pubs. The cost can vary from 6 to 20 depending on where you go and it is often included in the price of an overnight stay at a bed & breakfast or hotel.
The English breakfast is no longer considered to be part of the British staple diet but more so as a treat to be eaten now and again and especially at the weekends.
